Includes Support for Enhanced Digital Media Compatibility
Jun 17, 2010 - D-Link, the end-to-end network solutions provider for consumers and business, today released a free firmware update for its popular storage 802.11n all-in-one router that includes features to enhance the device's digital media content-sharing capabilities.
The D-Link® Xtreme N® Storage Router (DIR-685) update is a result of the device meeting the standards of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certification and logo program that is aimed at solving the inherent problem of using digital media between different consumer electronic devices. For example, DLNA-compliant TVs and PCs will work together to play music, photos or videos.
The DIR-685 firmware update, now available at www.dlink.com/support, now supports the following features:
* Digital Media Server (DMS) that enables media file transfers and management of connection between the server and DLNA devices. The DIR-685 comes with a built-in Network Attached Storage (NAS) feature that includes a Universal Plug and Play (UPnPâ) AV media server.
* Digital Media Controller (DMC) that gives users the option to control any UPnP device connected to the router using the touchpad on the DIR-685.
* Digital Media Rendering (DMR) for the improved playback of certain media files on the DIR-685's LCD screen.
The industry's first all-in-one home network router, the DIR-685 combines powerful 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity with NAS, USB device-sharing, digital photo frame, media content player, FTP server and Green technology in a sleek, compact desktop design.
"By meeting DLNA standards that confirm support for specific formats and features, we're now able to make it easier for users to share content across a home network," said Daniel Kelley, senior director of marketing, D-Link. "This free firmware update ensures that all relevant formats and features are supported in the DIR-685. It also will serve to minimize confusion by assisting customers in device selection."
The DIR-685's stylish upright design allows for easy viewing of the high-resolution 3.2-inch LCD screen that displays device status via graphical gauges and serves as a digital photo frame. Frame content is simple to manage at internetphotoframe.com. The router also allows users to stream video, RSS feeds and Internet content to media players and popular gaming devices.
The NAS feature supports both UPnP server functions and BitTorrent™ downloads with the ability to store up to a terabyte of data on a 2.5-inch SATA drive that slides easily into the side of the DIR-685. A built-in FTP server allows users to access documents, photos, music and other media locally through the home network or remotely across the Internet.
The DIR-685 includes two USB ports featuring D-Link’s unique SharePort™ technology, allowing multiple users to wirelessly share USB devices such as multi-function printers (MFP), scanners, and external hard drives, from virtually anywhere in the home or office. It also features Gigabit ports for fast-wired transmission.
D-Link Green™ technology is embedded in the router for conserving energy in several ways, including the ability to automatically recognize port activity and cable length and adjust power usage accordingly. Consolidation of multiple devices into a single device eliminates the need for multiple power supplies. It also includes an idle mode to automatically turn off power to the LCD screen when not in use.
